The administrator of this forum has extensive experience in using the FORTRAN programming language. As an example, Fortran was used in a project managing the Central Bank of Norways currency reserves. A high level macro language developed at MIT was combined with fortran code and numerical algorithms developed by http://www.nag.co.uk/ . Today, may 21 2011, I participated at a 200 year anniversary of the university of Oslo. There I talked to some persons working with chemistry projects solving (simulating) the Schrödinger equation http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/physics ... ation.html using fortran code and Python for the interface. They had some opinions that Fortran was better on matrix manipulation than C where a matrix is a pointer pointer. So Fortran is still going strong.
